andy lau is still the man

i just finished watching protege, an andy lau movie. i’ve seen a few asians movie recently and this is the best one so far. it reinforces the fact that even in his old age andy lau is still quite possibly the best thing to ever come out of hong kong. ok so his part wasn’t that big but he’s still cool :P

it’s a story about an undercover cop working to take down a drug lord (andy lau). story is nothing new. i think the kicker that got me was the kid in the movie. anything related to children always tugs at my heart.

i don’t want to give away too much. let’s just leave it as a recommended movie.

the kids section

i’ve noticed that among women, it is (for the most part) ok if they go shopping in the kids section. gap kids, jacob jr, etc. however when a guy is petite enough to fit children’s clothes he is ashamed and reluctant to do so.

a friend of mine (whom i originally thought was like 18, but he’s really 28) is that kind of guy. he is small and he could fit into kids clothing. i never quite realized this until we went looking for a suit and even the 34s were a bit big on him. i found it hilarious, but i don’t look down on him as a man. harry rosen and holts had nothing he could fit.

next up we went to sears and tried the kids section. i asked the cashier where the boys suits were and she asked me what size. i then pointed to my friend and said, “that size”. perhaps not the nicest thing to do, but i don’t know children sizes. lol…

we ended up finding that he could fit a 16, and an 18 would probably be perfect for him. we’ll have to try the holt’s kids section for some designer threads. i don’t even know if they have a kids section, i can only assume.

i guess if i were in his shoes i would find it a bit embarrassing. in society men are supposed to be “big” and “strong”. i know him pretty well though so i wouldn’t consider him a pansy by any means. fitting in kids clothes might work out to his benefit. you automatically save the 7% provincial tax we have! although i gotta say, when i shop with petite girls i always feel a bit awkward in the kids sections in stores…

fate

let’s have a little chat about fate. what is fate? do you believe in fate? i’m not going to actually answer those questions. go find a dictionary.

last night i accidentally left my fridge door open. i only noticed it when i reached for the milk the next morning :( i thought it might be ok and ate half a bowl of cereal before deciding it was a bad idea. now back to the topic of fate. i got home late last night after an intense night of basketball. i was low on milk and had nothing in the fridge at all. i was beat so i decided i would go shopping another time.

lucky me, i only wasted some eggs and milk. there are other items in the fridge but i think they are ok with the temperature change. i guess i’ll find out when i decide to use them and get really sick :P

speaking of sick, that’s what i am now. i think my old age is getting to me. the late night partying and early mornings aren’t that easy anymore. or perhaps fate is telling me to stay in this weekend and relax? that may be it.

i’ve noticed my creative juices haven’t really been flowing lately. my posts have gotten pretty mundane and boring. hopefully i can get of this lull sometime.

“long” weekend

unfortunately for me and some canadians i am unable to enjoy a true long weekend because canada day fell on a tuesday this year. i could take a day off, but i’m already going to europe for a month later this year. i may have mentioned it before, but that is another topic that i will go into great detail closer to the date.

nevertheless i still made do with the days i did have. highlight of the weekend came today after a long wait. for some it had been 3 years of waiting, for myself it was only a year. i’m referring to my family from japan. my sis, cousin, and myself decided to fly in the family and surprise everyone at dim sum. we masked it as a very very late father’s day dim sum.

screaming ensued and a lot of big smiles. they’ll be here for about a month and at the perfect time. i expect a lot of bbq’ing, drinking, and general bonding time. wee

i think i’ve decided that i will not be taking swimming lessons in july. the weather is just too nice for me to be spending 2 days a week inside a pool learning to swim with old people. i went to the beach this weekend and realized how terrible my body has become since my sun run training. i lost about 5 pounds during that time. i’ve since gained it back however a lot of it is in my gut :(

while my goal is to gain weight, i want good weight. i admit i have a horrible diet. eating out everyday for every meal sure doesn’t help. time to make healthier choices and cook more.

and finally… a bit of a rant… i’ve been interested in this girl who is probably the ultimate social butterfly. it was fun at first although really hard to actually get together. well i tailed off my advances lately since i’ve been pretty busy. she called me up to hang out on saturday which i gladly accepted. i needed an excuse to bail on clubbing that night anyways ;) so she calls me up and when i meet up with her she’s all lame and quiet.

now as a guy i would take the call as interest, but what is up with the way she was acting. a real turn off and seems like a sign of disinterest. why did you call then? women are so confusing. luckily we ran into other mutual people we knew and hung out together. otherwise it would have been very boring as i had to do all the work in keeping things interesting.

anyways she has been dropped from the potential list. another one falls down.

what will you do with your climate dividend?

the bc government is trying to be green and giving everyone in bc $100 back as a climate action dividend. they are trying to encourage everyone in the city to use the money towards making their homes more environmentally friendly.

but what about the people like me who use very little power already? i use so little power, you can’t tell when i’m not actually living in my place or if i’m on vacation. excluding december and january of course… damn winter.

since i can’t use the money towards making my home much more energy efficient i think i’ll spend the money on gas. i’ve been holding out on filling my car for the last little while because of the high gas prices. and from what i hear gas is going up another 2.41c starting next month! you know, driving a hummer can really dig into your pockets. but hey, at least my home is environment friendly!

to debt or not to debt

i’ve been meeting a lot of interesting people lately. one in particular i’ve been spending a lot of time with and talking to. tonight we had a conversation about buying nice things and basically going into debt to have them. i will not argue the merits of having nice things. i like nice things too! but how much money are you willing to borrow to buy that penthouse apartment… or that new bmw?

at a certain point aren’t you just living beyond your means? personally i would feel trapped in life. shackled to my job and bill payments. i agree we only live once but what is life if it’s full of stress so you can have all these things? i feel like only when you have no debt are you truly living your life freely. some say when you work in a regular job, you’re working for the man. i guess if you have to constantly pay bills you’re also working for the man, which is the credit card company.

i guess it’s my blue collar conservative upbringing. save money, spend it when you have it, and don’t buy things you don’t really need.

while i only follow this sometimes, i think i’m still doing ok. i hate to wonder about people out there who would be willing to sell their soul to have things. i hope this particular friend i talked to isn’t like that, i don’t know for sure yet. and is it just to get nice things? or is it an image thing? i know people who drive beamers and mercs just to pretend they have some kind of status.

perhaps the root of all this evil is the pressure from society?

bathroom attendants

i never quite understood the role of a bathroom attendant. they sit (or stand) near the sink. when you go wash your hands they may turn on the facet for you, pass the soap dispenser, and pass you a towel. after you dry off they proceed to offer you a various selection of colognes, hair products, and lotions.

if perhaps the service offered was something i couldn’t do on my own, then i would accept their role in the washroom. but it’s not like they are providing anything that a 5 year old couldn’t do themselves. it almost seems like they are there simply to milk more money away from your pocket.

speaking of money, how much do you tip them? $1? $2? surely more if you use one of their products.

i could do without them. i could do without the social guilt they create with their presence. tip them and i feel like a fool throwing away his money. walk out and not throw anything into their jar and i am labeled cheap.

what’s the solution?

i propose all public washrooms become single self sustained entities. this way you can check your teeth, fix your hair, sniff your armpits without any shame.

but what about all the attendants out there? don’t you feel bad for displacing them all?

not at all. in fact they can start offering their services to private individuals and make more money. if they offered the service of applying lotion to my loins after i exit my shower then i’d totally hire them! ;)

oreo and beers

i was on the train today coming home from downtown when i noticed a tent at science world. at first i thought it was kokanee, but really it was an oreo tent. has anyone else noticed how eerily similar their colours are? i think kokanee planned it on purpose. show the customers colours from their past. creating a subconscious bond where none should exist. damn they have some great marketing minds.

i’ve talked to a travel agent and i’m set on going to europe in late sept for 3.5 weeks. if everything goes as planned i’ll be there for oktoberfest! going to be an expensive trip, i estimate around $6000 being spent total. next year will be australia. the following year south america? then africa?

the bro level

i have this friend who i used to see everyday. well we worked together at one point. then he got a job somewhere else, i got a job somewhere else. i was a reference for said job. i also helped him get an interview at my work, but he took the other job. i asked him for a favour and i don’t think he’s going to do it. i’ve never asked him for anything and the favour is simply bringing something i mail to him back to vancouver for me when he returns. nothing illegal, nothing crazy. but alas.

i began to ponder the levels of friendship a man can have with another. it pretty much boils down to what would you do if you saw your bro in a fight.

if you see your bro in a fight and he can easily dispatch of the other party/parties, then you do nothing. regardless of your level of bro-ness, you do nothing. why get your hands dirty if it’s taken care of.

the interesting part is when you see your bro in a fight he probably won’t win.

if you are willing to step in because you can take care of the other party or break up the fight… then you are a level 1 bro.

if you are willing to step in even when you know you’ll get hurt but not that badly… then you are a level 2 bro.

if you are willing to step in regardless of how big the other party is and regardless of how much damage they’ll do to you… then you are a level 3 bro.

if you are willing to step in regardless of any potential sexually transmitted diseases to ensure your bro’s happiness… then you will reach a special bonus level. the level 4 bro. also known as the man-whore pervert friend.

* sorry for the excessive use of the word bro. i promise i’ll never use it again. until i feel like it. fuck promises.
